Rockwell Acres
Donald Wyatt, with four successful novels in print, is traveling the countryside in his pickup and attached camper, searching for a new plot. His brakes fail on a sharp turn and he finds himself slightly injured and his truck badly damaged. He walks the half-mile to the only house in view and finds Kelly Crowder, sprawled on the floor beside her overturned walker. A call to 911 brings help and, after receiving treatment for his own wounds, Donald visits Kelly in her hospital room. He finds her less than grateful for his rescue, accusing him of being a pervert for having glimpsed her breasts when the medic unbuttoned her blouse. With Kelly in the hospital and his pickup in a shop, Donald explores Kelly's property and discovers the remains of a well, constructed with mountain rocks. Under the dilapidated well-house is a dingy mattress and the area is strewn with used condoms, indicating the locals come to the site for something other than drinking water. There is something else at the well that Donald does not see on his first visit and that something else leads to Kelly's near rape, a suicide, brutal torture and multiple murders.
